Gillingham manager Martin Allen has spoken of his delight at seeing his side beat Charlton Athletic at Priestfield on Saturday afternoon.
A 26th minute Danny Kedwell headed goal was enough to seperate the two sides and keep Gillingham’s unbeaten run going throughout pre-season.
Not only did Gillingham win the game, over the course of the game they played the more attractive football and looked the better side against their local rivals.
Speaking after the game to the club’s official website, Allen told of his delight at securing the win whilst playing some neat passing football:
“It was good for our supporters to see us win a game and keep a clean sheet against our local rivals. The players deserve all the credit because they are the ones who tried to put our work into practice.”
“We tried to play a bit of football but they played the diamond system in midfield which made it difficult for us to pass it, so that’s something we need to look at if the opposition do that.”
“Overall it was a really good team performance – all of the lads that came off the bench played well too so it was a good effort from everybody.”
“You don’t get points or prizes but you don’t have to be a rocket scientist if you watch that to notice we restricted them to very few chances. It was important to have discipline and defend as a unit to not let them through.”
“We had a bit of sunshine, no hassle, no stress, no yellow cards and a good disciplined performance. It was a good day for the club.”
Meanwhile, Allen went on to explain The Gills have missed out on three potential signings on Friday with one falling through at the last minute, one didn’t happen as that club’s Chief Executive wasn’t involved in the transfer and the last fell trhough as that player joined a club in a higher division.
